This unit is designed to provide the student with the knowledge and understanding of the types and functions of ports and terminals and their management, operation and maintenance. It includes global, international and national freight movements, types of goods and vessels, port and area controls, physical and human resource requirements, consignments, unitisation and consignment monitoring. It then moves on to the roles of Port and Customs authorities and how goods are moved under regulations, conventions and other general and trading agreements and the associated documentation. The unit closes with an examination of port development and planning requirements, port support and ancillaries and associated infrastructure requirements and environmental considerations.
This unit is designed to provide the skills and knowledge required to understand the operations of supply chains in various business settings. The supply chain origins and concepts will be explored. The unit will also discover the different flows in a supply chain, with the upstream and downstream linkages identified. The supply chain environment will be analysed both for local and global operations. The unit is made up of four elements which cover the fundamentals of supply chain; the supply chain environment; operations in a supply chain and supply chain performance. Various supply chain activities and performance measurements will also be identified and discussed in more detail in the final two sections of the unit.
This Unit is designed to provide students with the knowledge and understanding of Warehousing and deliver the skills required by an aspiring warehouse manager to operate effectively. The unit covers all of the key areas of warehousing operations and the key activities involved in each area.
This unit and its text have been specifically designed and formulated to assist junior level managers to develop senior management skills. The unit contains a wide but detailed spread of information covering key and significant management practice and theory across line/functional management through to business planning/motivations and the art of managing people. The unit will educate any student in how to effectively deliver good sound management practice within a broad and diverse range of business sectors.
The aim of this unit is to use core business theory and deliver this in a way that is practical and easy to understand. The Business Theory unit gives the student the ability to understand and use theory from such elements as marketing and product positioning to managing information, reporting to finance and aspects of legality. At the end of this program the student will be able to theoretically map how a company should operate and fully understand in practical terms the operation of theory application.
Students are expected to conduct an organizational culture assessment for an organization of their choice. This is to help them apply the skills they have learnt during the Module 2 lessons. Students will submit a report at the end of the assignment.
In this course, students will be introduced to organisational culture, how cultures begin and develop and how they change. They will also be introduced to organisational culture assessment tools and how to administer them. There will be practice sessions to administer the tools, analyse the data and discuss the results.
At the end of this course, students will know what organisational culture is, how to assess and undertake interventions to change it. Lectures, group discussions and administration of organisational culture assessment instruments will be the main delivery methods.
In this course, students will be introduced to the Family of OD interventions and taken through a Framework for determining suitable OD intervention of choice for a given situation. Lectures, group assignment and presentations will be the methods of choice for the delivery.
In this course, students will be taken through an overview of social research and ethical considerations and introduced to qualitative research, research approaches, qualitative research methods (the Toolkit) and qualitative data analysis. Students will also be taken through a research approach that they can use if they want to quantify the variation in a phenomenon, situation, problem or issue, or if information is gathered using predominantly quantitative variables, and if the analysis is geared to ascertain the magnitude of the variation (Enu-Kwesi, 2006). Thus students will be taken through the scientific method, introduced to the design of quantitative research tools and methods of quantitative data analysis. Facilitation, lectures, group assignment and presentations will be the methods of choice for the delivery.
The purpose of the Practical Assignment 1 is to give students the opportunity to apply the knowledge they acquired on OD Code of Ethics during Module 1. Students will be required to identify a population and administer an OD Ethical Guideline Questionnaire to establish whether it should apply to all professionals. Students will submit a report at the end of the assignment.
The OD Code of Ethics is designed to guide the practitioner’s behavior. The module will introduce students to OD values and ethics. Specifically, the module enhances students’ understanding of the importance of the OD ethics, the levels of responsibility for the OD practitioner. The module also draws on the students’ experience of cultural practices that pose ethical challenges to the practice of OD in Ghana and Africa as a whole. This course will be delivered through lectures, brainstorming sessions and case studies.
The “self” is the most critical part of the OD methodology. This module aims to deepen the OD students’ ability to apply who they are, what they value and how they see the world in all that they do. In addition to lectures, other delivery approaches such as individual, pairs and small group and reflection exercises will be used to aid self-discovery. Peer group feedback exercises, series of trigger exercises and sharing of personal experiences will be facilitated and processed to reveal individual strengths and development needs.
The aim of this course is to introduce students to organisation development (OD), its history, evolution and theoretical foundations. It also introduces and examines the OD cycle, its relevance to the history of OD and application. Case studies will be used to illustrate OD efforts. At the end of this course, members of the learning community will begin to get together; learn about organisations, Organisation Development and how it is applied in the management of change.
